Take a Breath and Say Thank You

I met Laura during Gratitude New York back in April of 2016.  She came out to spread gratitude during the dry erase gratitude challenge.  Then she shared her wonderful voice and guitar playing at our event at The Muse in Brooklyn on the 30th!  She is an Actress, Singer, and yoga/acro teacher.  I really appreciate Laura sharing her gratitude in our space!

What does being grateful mean to you?

Being grateful means looking at and appreciating the things I have and feeling content in my heart that I have them. It’s taking the time to love the people in my life, my privilege and everything I can experience in this life.

Right now, in this moment what are 3 things you are grateful for?

My family, having food and the means to stay warm in the winter.

Who is the first person that comes to mind when you hear, “Someone in my life that I’m grateful for and why?”

Aryn, because she has been the strongest support and encouragement in my life since we met. She’s an amazing human that I admire deeply and feel so grateful to grow next to and learn with.

What is your morning routine like?

My mornings look different every day. I’m not really a routine person but usually my mornings consist of some writing, essentials oils, homemade breakfast and some kind of movement, usually yoga or handstands.

What events led you to the practice of yoga, and then acro yoga?

I was dating a yoga teacher who kept insisting that I try it. I had no idea what yoga was at the moment and it wasn’t as popular as it is now, but I ended up going to a class with him and loved it immediately. The first class changed my life. Around 2 months later, after a yoga class, a guy was practicing acro yoga with one of the teachers and I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. I started taking pictures of them and when they were done I asked where I could learn that and the guy said he would teach me some right there so I flew on him for a bit and was hooked. My boyfriend at the time and I took his workshop the following week and then some private lessons with him.

How is gratitude part of your yoga practice?

My yoga practice is my lifestyle so everything I do is part of that practice. Having a gratitude practice changed my life. It trained my brain to focus on all the amazing things I get to experience in this lifetime. During my yoga practice and when I teach my classes I always, always take a few breaths in gratitude. We take the time to consciously acknowledge how much we can be grateful for in every moment.

Who is one person that you love to practice acro yoga with and why?

My favorite person to practice acro yoga with is someone that’s willing to make mistakes, trust and communicate with me. Someone who wants to push each other and have fun. Someone who’s kind, patient and generous. Micah Ellinger is a good example of someone who’s high up on my list of people I love to work with. @micahacrobat

Can you tell us about a struggle in the past year that you are now grateful for?

Last year I struggled with some of my relationships and people I dated and I’m so so grateful that they were amazing people that walked through all the ups and downs with me and are wonderful friends in my life. I’ve learned so much about communication, love, and community.

Can you share with us some of the things you are excited about in 2020?

I am so excited to spend a month in San Diego training at the Circus Center followed by teaching a residential Acro Teacher Training in Virginia.

In closing, what are some suggestions that you can give our readers that can help them incorporate gratitude into their daily lives?

A very popular way to incorporate gratitude into your life is to write down every day 3 things you are grateful for. Do it! even if you feel resistance. Do it anyway. You will find yourself noticing more things to be grateful for. I also picked specific things in my life that I do every day to stop and feel grateful for eating and taking a shower. You can pick other things that resonate with you but now it’s second nature for me to be in the shower, close my eyes, feel the water, take a breath and say THANK YOU. Say thank you a lot even if you don’t know to who. Your life is listening.
