Gratitude, Family & Dinner

with Jerry Springer

Interview by Chris Palmore

Jerry Springer spent decades as one of the most recognizable personalities in American television. Long before The Jerry Springer Show became a pop-culture phenomenon, he had worked in politics, served as mayor of Cincinnati, and built a career that moved between public service, television, radio, and conversation.

But my meeting with Jerry started in a way I never could have planned.

In 2016, I connected online with the co-host of Jerry’s podcast. We became friends online, started talking, and somehow, the very next week I found myself having dinner with Jerry Springer in Ludlow, Kentucky.

That’s one of those sentences I never expected to write.

One week I was making a new connection online. The next, I was sitting across the table from Jerry Springer.

And because this was GratitudeSpace, there was one question I wanted to ask him.

The video from that evening is included below.

Who is one person in your life you’re grateful for?

Chris Palmore:
Hi, I’m Chris, founder of GratitudeSpace.com, and I’m here with my new friend Jerry Springer. Say hi, Jerry.

Jerry Springer:
Hey, how are you all doing? Thanks for having me on.

Chris:
Oh, the pleasure’s all mine.

Now, Jerry, could you share with us one person in your social network that you’re grateful for and all that you—

Jerry:
Well, I’m obviously most grateful to my wife.

Forty-two years, and she has been supportive, always great advice, unconditional love.

And, you know, I’m kind of out there a lot, and to know that there’s always someone that has your back, you know, even when whatever else is going on in the world here.

Really great.

She gave me the thing I love most in life, our daughter.

Honestly, I have such a public side of my life, it’s great to have a private life as well.

And I don’t know if I could survive without that.

That’s what I’m most grateful for.

Chris:
That’s beautiful. Thank you so much.

I’m Chris with Jerry Springer saying, stay grateful.

“To know that there’s always someone that has your back.”

In Remembrance

In Remembrance of Jerry Springer

Jerry Springer passed away on April 27, 2023, at the age of 79.

Looking back at this moment from 2016, what stays with me isn’t the television personality or the public figure. It’s Jerry talking about his wife, his daughter, and how important it was to have a private life behind such a public one.

I’m grateful our paths crossed — and grateful I got the chance to ask him what he was grateful for.
