Exclusive Interview
Model Gratitude
Shawn Stevenson is the powerhouse behind the highly listened to The Model Health Show. I had been listening to Shawn for several years before this conversation and could tell from his words that he was a grateful person.
This interview was over a year and a half in the making from our original contact. I want to give some serious love and gratitude to Alpha, Anne, and Shawn for making this happen!

01
What does being grateful mean to you?
To me, gratitude is a practice. It’s a certain perspective or a perception of reality that you see through.
Gratitude to me, and being grateful, means that I’m always looking for the gift in things. And when things are challenging, I’m tuning back into: What are things that I have to be grateful for right now, through this challenge?
And so that’s what being grateful means to me. It’s a practice, and it’s a perception of reality.
“Gratitude is like an antidote. It’s like a superpower.”
02
Right now, in this moment, what are three things you are grateful for?
I’m grateful for technology and our ability to communicate with people all over the world. It is truly a great time to be alive.
Number two, I’m immensely grateful for my family—specifically my beautiful wife and my best friend, always being there to hold me accountable and to just be a friend.
And number three, I’m grateful for my experience. I’m grateful for all the different things I’ve been through in my life. Many of the times I did not enjoy, but I’m grateful for the person that it’s made me into.
03
How do you feel that gratitude has impacted your journey to get to where you are today, and how does it continue to impact where you are headed?
This goes back to the gratitude practice. This is something that I even implement in my meditation daily.
I think about—I just go through a list of things that I’m grateful for. I’m happy and grateful for my wife. I’m happy and grateful for Sleep Smarter impacting lives all over the world. I’m happy and grateful for my children and their faces and their spirit.
So I feel that gratitude has been like a superpower because, again, life can be so complex and even downright ugly sometimes, but gratitude is like an antidote. It’s like a superpower through all those things.
04
Who is the first person that comes to mind when you hear, “Someone in my life that I’m grateful for,” and why?
I’ve already mentioned my wife a couple times, so I’m going to say my mother-in-law.
I’m incredibly grateful for her. I give great gratitude for her every day because she was the right type of teacher that I needed in my life when I was in a place that many people find themselves—and specifically many men—of really thinking like we’ve got things figured out, like we know so much.
She had an approach to talking to me and teaching me, even though I didn’t know she was teaching me, to think differently, to have an open mind and a different perspective, to see things from different angles.
I’m grateful for her teaching me meditation. I’m grateful for her being somebody who’s always bringing laughter and finding humor in things.
So that’s what I would say for that one.
