Gratitude & Hope

with Joel Smallbone

of for KING + COUNTRY

Interview by Chris Palmore

for KING + COUNTRY is the award-winning duo of brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone. Born in Sydney, Australia and based in Nashville, the brothers have become one of contemporary Christian music’s most recognized acts, known for their cinematic live shows, powerful songwriting, and songs centered around hope, faith, and the human experience.

The duo has earned four GRAMMY Awards, along with multiple Dove Awards, No. 1 songs, and more than a billion on-demand streams.

On April 3, 2016, I met Joel Smallbone at Winter Jam at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky.

It was the final night of a 48-show tour that, as Joel shared with me, had reached more than half a million people.

With the tour coming to an end, I asked him a couple of simple questions about gratitude and one moment that made him smile.

01

Who is someone in your life you’re grateful for, and why?

Chris Palmore:
Someone in your life you’re grateful for—their name and a few reasons why?

Joel Smallbone:
Well, I’m going to shift your question just a little bit because of the moment.

This is 48 shows we just wrapped up tonight, over half a million folks. It’s a tour called Winter Jam. It’s a tour of hope.

I play in a band called for KING & COUNTRY. I’m overwhelmed with gratefulness for the opportunity to be part of the tour. I’m overwhelmed with gratefulness to share hope with the world, towards heaven, and grateful for every person on the team on this.

Chris:
That’s beautiful.

“I’m overwhelmed with gratefulness to share hope with the world.”

02

What was one thing that made you smile?

Chris:
What was one thing that made you smile? Just one moment where you were like, “This one.”

Joel:
The last show of the tour or so, we did a lot of pranks.

Chris:
Okay. So what was one of the pranks?

Joel:
There’s an Irishman on the show named Darren. He’s in a band called We Are Messengers, and, as I say, he’s from Ireland.

So we went up with seven Scottish flags and waved them across the stage very seriously.

Mind you, I don’t think the audience picked up on it, but Darren knew what we were doing, and it put a smile on our faces.

Chris:
Well, that’s some love right there.

Joel:
Deep love.

Chris:
I’m Chris Palmore with Joel, saying stay grateful. Good night.

“Deep love.”
